Project: The Daemon (AI Cognitive Scaffold)
The daemon is Steven’s ongoing project to build a unified AI-powered cognitive support system. The name refers to the computer science concept of a persistent background process: not a tool you switch on, but infrastructure running underneath everything else.
Origins
The daemon traces from epistēm, his 2022 attempt to build a personal knowledge operating system in iOS. Where epistēm was app-based and never shipped, the daemon is prompt-based and lives inside commercially available LLMs.
The impulse is identical: unified personal knowledge, quantitative tracking, cognitive infrastructure. The January 2026 chronicle describes the work of “unifying [his] instructions personnalisées à travers Claude, GPT et Notion AI” as the evolved form of what epistēm was trying to do. The 105 AI conversations of that month serve as both output and calibration material.
Architecture
The daemon as described in January 2026 is a layer of customized instructions, constraints, and philosophical commitments applied consistently across multiple AI systems. Its defined goals:
- Bypass decision fatigue: reduce the cognitive load of meta-decisions about how to work
- Temporal anchoring: counteract ADHD-related time blindness by embedding temporal context into AI interactions
- Loop protection: prevent verification spirals that arise when executive dysfunction and perfectionism interact
- Avoid generic AI output: explicitly banned patterns, generic language, sycophantic framing, and restating what was just said
The goal is not a smarter tool. It is a more continuous one: “le raffinement du daemon. Unifier les instructions personnalisées à travers Claude, GPT et Notion AI en une philosophie cohérente d’augmentation cognitive.”
Steven describes it as “une couche exocorticale”, an exocortical layer.
Function in January 2026
The daemon is described as what made PartnerNote and Le Loup coexist:
“Sans ce méta-travail, PartnerNote reste une idée dispersée et Le Loup reste un cri sans direction. Le daemon, c’est l’échafaudage qui permet aux deux de coexister.”
PartnerNote required sustained analytical rigor; Le Loup required compressed creative vulnerability. Without stable cognitive infrastructure, the two modes would have collapsed into each other.
Function in February–March 2026
In the Feb–Mar 2026 chronicle, the role of AI scaffolding is described more starkly:
“pendant ces deux mois, l’IA m’a permis de tenir une continuité mentale… Sans cet échafaudage, il y aurait eu beaucoup plus de trous. Beaucoup plus de glissements. Beaucoup plus de perte d’élan entre les fragments.”
The claim has shifted: not that the daemon enables better work, but that it prevents disappearing. “Ce n’est pas du confort. C’est devenu une manière de ne pas disparaître entièrement entre deux phases de clarté.”
The Anthropic interview (December 2025)
Steven participated in a research interview with an Anthropic team in December 2025. Asked what AI could help him with if it could excel at anything: “tout ce qui touche au fonctionnement exécutif.” Asked what that would open: “que je pourrais enfin accomplir toutes mes ambitions pour rendre le monde meilleur.”
The daemon is his current implementation of this vision, built from available tools while waiting for a more capable version to exist.
Connection to neurodivergence
The daemon is best understood as a prosthetic for executive function. It is external scaffolding that does what the ADHD-ASD combination makes internally unreliable: maintaining continuity, sequencing tasks, protecting focus, and suppressing irrelevant branches. The structural deficit is neurological. The daemon is the workaround.
Status
Ongoing and unfinished by design. The daemon is not a product. It is a practice, refined conversation by conversation. Each month’s chronicle is partly a calibration artifact of the system that produced it.
