Queer Harm Reduction Community
The queer harm reduction community was the social environment around Steven’s Paris techno and after-party life. It combined drug use, sexual freedom, long conversations, and explicit risk management.
Social safety
Steven describes the Paris queer community as the first environment in which he could reduce the social defenses he had learned through childhood and adolescence. It was a place where difference was expected rather than punished.
This mattered for masking. The community did not remove the mask entirely, but it created the first documented setting where he could “lâcher du lest.”
Harm reduction
The after-party milieu involved 3-MMC, GHB/GBL, ketamine, and multi-day social gatherings. Steven describes the community as mature about “réduction des risques.” It had language and practices for managing drug risk rather than pretending the risk was absent.
This does not cancel the later consequences of substance use. It explains why the use did not occur in ignorance and why Steven continued to distinguish between use, misuse, function, pleasure, and harm.
Ambivalence
The same community was protective and structurally risky. It gave Steven safety, intellectual stimulation, and a place to be less guarded. It also normalized afters, long sleepless periods, and the 3-MMC pattern that later moved from social context into functional dependency.
The community is therefore both refuge and vector. It helped him become himself socially, and it helped create the conditions under which the substance use arc became durable.
