Pattern: Autistic Burnout

Autistic burnout is the frame Steven used after his 2024 ADHD and autism diagnosis to reinterpret the functional collapse of 2022 to 2025. It names the exhaustion produced by years of masking, incompatible work structures, and self-medication without the right diagnostic language.

Before the diagnosis

Before the diagnosis, Steven interpreted the period largely as failure: inconsistency, inability to work, inability to recover, and inability to maintain the life structures he knew he needed. The language available to him was moral and operational.

The diagnosis changed the interpretation. He wrote that he was relieved to understand he was not simply incompetent, but had been trying to move forward without the right cards in hand.

Mechanism

The burnout accumulated through repeated forced adaptation. Offices, commutes, standups, ESN culture, visibility to others, and constant masking all demanded resources that were not replenishing.

Substances filled part of the gap. 3-MMC and later other stimulants made action possible, but they also increased the debt. The same tools that helped him perform normality made the exhaustion harder to see until the system failed.

Relationship to other patterns

Autistic burnout is not separate from executive dysfunction or masking. It is what happens when those patterns are forced through incompatible environments for too long.

The March 2023 crisis becomes legible through this frame. The Bastille apartment, the freelance collapse, the closed curtains, and the substance escalation are not isolated failures. They are parts of a depleted adaptive system.
