Shadow
Shadow is the cloud gaming company to which Steven applied in late December 2021 and early January 2022. The company matters less as an employer than as the object of a concentrated professional projection.
The imagined future
Steven did not treat Shadow as one application among many. He treated it as a possible life structure. The company became a “projet de vie potentiel”, which made the process carry more weight than an ordinary recruitment pipeline.
The recruitment included a technical test, technical review, CTO conversation, HR call, and final rejection. Each stage appeared to go well until the final decision.
Rejection
Shadow chose another candidate. Steven experienced the rejection as a defining professional blow because he had not kept parallel options open.
The rejection landed after the ESN firing and at the beginning of a year he had invested with symbolic importance. It marked the end of the post-Arthur recovery attempt and the beginning of the longer 2022 to 2023 collapse.
